Yes, Branding does help you succeed both online and off line. I the simplest terms branding is just letting other people to get to know, like, and trust you. The difference is that online you can do that with many more people much faster.
An example of what branding yourself does is: If you were going to the hardware store to buy something for the house and you had a choice of two stores. You didn't really know the owners of either very well, but had heard one of the owners talk at a local meeting on a topic you cared about. There is a good chance that you could identify with the owner you heard talk and go to his store instead of the store where you do not know the people.
If you had not identified with either store owner, then there would be a 50-50 chance for either store to get your business. You would probably use other factors like price and location to help make your buying decision.
The same is true online as well only there are usually more than two options for you to do business with. It is all about the know, like , and trust factor in the relationship.
I'm sorry about the longer answer, but the short answer is Yes, it helps you, but is not 100% necessary for you to have success online.
