It depends on who you are, I can only answer for me. To serve others is what is required of me even if it means sacrifice myself, but I have found that when I serve others I have truly served myself.
I am a giver and most would say to a fault. I am a giver as that is what I am and to change that in me would be for me to be someone else. Here is a good example of my serving someone else and me being blessed behind it.
I am in the middle of what I think is fraud. I have not completely proved it so I cannot say that is what it is. I have even sent money as my spirit led me to help someone. Like I told the person I am not interested in the monetary value, money comes and goes. I just wanted them to see there are decent people out there and that there are better ways to do things than lying and conning. So not two weeks later, I received double what I gave the person and the $200 I gifted a friend in the form of work-study at the college. I do not have to stuggle and by serving others I can be a blessing and be blessed.
Now I am not saying pass out your money, but we have other things we can do, saying something kind instead of harsh, listening to a stranger that might need someone to talk to at the time, giving your time without asking for money. These are all acts of servants and as it should make you feel better contributing to a better society, there are also some blessings in it if you believe in God or Karma.
I have found people are simply looking for some good in anyone and if it has to start one person at a time, then let it be so. I love being a servant and I am highly regarded when people speak to me. I am not what they expected and even those who don't believe what I believe respect me and my God because of how I carry myself and what I do. I did not always used to be like that, but I learned bumping my head against the wall is only causing me pain and others just move on.
One thing I have learned is we are not meant to be servants to everyone and when we are servants to those who we are not suppose to serve, things tend to come out a mess. We can hurt when trying to help, this one needs balance in order to achieve the appropriate goal and not make things worse than they were.
