1. I think You put the message notification link to wrong place. The area where my eyes (and regarding some scientific experiments) is left top sector - in Apsense dashboard where my picture is. I think this notification must be somewhere in that area.
2. The font size must be bigger (and bolder)
3. best background for important information is white
4. If a member has a new e-mail or notification, there should be some blinking "NB!" or a picture with animation, that calls "look here!!!"
Really, sometimes I log in and even don't see the notification, because I almost never look above the members stats tab.
Hmm. What if You add the notification link to members stats window, like this - "New Messages/notifications - 2 or 12 or NONE". I think only this little move can increase the visibility.
