Thank you all for some very insightful answers. The reason I posed this question was because of an encounter I had the other day with someone I am peripherally associated with.
It got me to thinking if it is better to work with one that has generic knowledge about many aspects of internet marketing or to work with one that has mastered one aspect of internet marketing.
All the answers given here, thus far, are good and applicable to one circumstance or another, and at the time moment.
While is is true that a CEO that has many department heads, has access to many experts from which to draw from, I'm not sure that I would want surgery performed on me my a generic doctor or one that "knows a little about alot". I'm rather be operated on my a specialist. Recently I under went 3 surgeries on my right eye, so yeah I don't think I would have opted on surgery from the general care doctor.
It's also true that someone that has a little knowledge about a lot of things can be helpful and even insightful. If I am trying to optimize my website for a specif market, I think I would defer to a SEO expert rather than heed advice from someone that may be good at marketing in general, not to say the gal with the general marketing experience has nothing to teach me.
I guess what I am saying is that in general a "jack of all trades" also has a place in my entourage, but when I need or want help in a very specif area, niche or target, I'm going to an expert in that area if I could. This is just MHO.
