I suppose it depends on the movie, an classic like "Gone With The Wind", will never be able to be remade, that is just my opinion, there are many classics, that is great the way they are.
But i think with the special effects and powerfull computer technologies today, there is no harm done, when they enhance movies, like what they did to the Starwars movies.
At the end of the day, Hollywood is also just a big money industry, and i think they know that by remaking a movie of the sixties or earlier, is going to be well received by todays movie goers, who most probably did not see the original movie.
