On another site someone did a post about the new eco-friendly lightbulbs when he realized that they contained Mercury and needs to be disposed of in a certain manner. Do you read and follow disposal instructions on eco-friendly items you throw away?

I read that stuff and I dispose of items as directed. I replaced most all the bulbs in my home with compacts and now am reading MANY health articles about how bad this kind of product is for us. When it's a major article in "Prevention" you know you better take heed.

C: It is not the disposal that is the problem. The bad news is if you happen to break one of the eco-friendly mercury bulbs by law you may have to hire a haz-mat team to do the cleanup at very high cost. How many times have we broken a light bulb replacing it? MyMagic

This is true but when you look at the information provided about CFL's they tell you to "Open the window" and ventilate the room for about 15 minutes then pick up the pieces. And how many of these bulbs will be broken at the landfill? It says dispose of according to Local, state or federal laws but how many know where to find the applicable law much less even put the effort into finding them?

And that is the truly scary part! We are being sold on these bulbs as the way to save MONEY, for most people that is why they change, then a few years down the line we find dangers and risks we knew nothing about. I'm sure at some point the idea of putting lead in paint was sold as a way to say money too. It was a great thing until we start seeing the results of lead poisoning. Asbestos was such a great product to help make building and other items fire retardant until we saw the health risks. These bulbs remind me of the same thing. A great life changing product to turn the world upside down with everyone pushing and supporting it until they can no longer hide, bury or misdirect people from the fact that it is killing them.

Mercury is a liquid metal and while it spills cause mercury vapours which are harmful to the body. I think the likes of mercury and lead are mostly banned in developed countries though they continue in 3rd world countries.....

Yes many countries have banned lead and mercury but they still allow for it's use in some things like these lightbulbs and vaccines. The problem with mercury is that we don't always know it is mercury we are dealing with. Thiomersol is used in vaccines as a preservative what most people don't know is that it is a mercury derivative. But now it has been linked to the skyrocketing incidences of Autism in children. So more people are beginning to understand the effects but not enough yet.
