Do your own SEO and it costs you nothing. It is not rocket science as some try to make out so they can bleed you dry.

I think SEO is better as its very easy to use compared to the PPC. And moreover for newbies its the best solution.

The question is "which is better" and the answer depends very much upon your budget. If you have a bottomless pocket, PPC is by far the "better" way if "better" equates to quickest. By using SEO you can sometimes achieve page 1 of Google by using strange, unusual or miss-spelled keywords. For example, I am still number one for redandyellowspottedpaint but nobody searches for it and nobody wants to buy red and yellow spotted paint. SEO your site for outlandish or unusual long tail keywords and you could get to page 1 quickly and cheaply but don't expect everybody to search for the keywords you have optimised for. PPC and SEO can be as expensive or as cheap as you can afford and the results will reflect the time and money expended. In reality, your quest should be to be on page 1 with popular keywords and there is no simple answer to which is the best way. There was a time that quality content was all that was requiired because search engines would find quality and deliver it to their clients. Quality content is now of little value since internet marketers spend so much time gaming the system.

I would say SEO provided you have a blog or site specific to your niche and where whatever your selling is sold in a non-invasive fashion. Personally I have taken the top spot in google for my locale in a matter of a few hours ground up launch of a site. Extending to a more global presence will take a bit more time, proper tagging and consistent addition of relevant content to brand your site as a source of know-how and expertise in your specific niche.

BJ - my point is simply this - I have seen far too many small businesses ripped off by SEO experts who guarantee Google page 1 results. There are only so many positions on page 1 and to get there DEMANDS that you either spend a great deal of money or a great deal of time (or use Mickey Mouse keywords). Put simply, with a popular keyword, the average small business does not have a hope in hell of getting to page 1 without a massive spend of time and/or money. redandyellowspottedpaint was created as an example of the under-hand means by which SEO providers con their clients. Local SEO is often sleight of hand using the town name in the keyword and then using precise match on the demonstration Google search. "yellowcarsinaberystwyth" would get to page 1 but yellow cars in aberystwyth would get nowhere. You make my point when you say that using a keyword nobody will search for does not make sense AND YET THIS IS HOW MOST SEO PROVIDERS CONVINCE THER VICTIMS THAT THEY HAVE DONE A GOOD JOB! There are low search volume, long tail keywords which can get a site onto Google page 1 but you need to optimise for hundreds or thousands of them for the number of searches directed to your site by the search engines to become serious in volume.

@oldcoot I knew you had a motive, and it is an excellent demonstration of how 99.9% of the people that claim to be SEO experts. One of the reasons I would never take on any of these talents being offered for $5 to get you on Google page 1 - A real SEO expert would charge around $500 a day, if not per hour, to install and initiate ALL the necessary things to get "perfect" SEO note the inverted comma's around the word perfect. I do this to indicate that nothing to do with SEO can be perfect because no one knows exactly what the algorithms are. So, my perfect is to be read as meaning as close as humanly possible.

SEO, definitely. PPC is just too costly and it does take more time for the effects of the campaign to be seen. SEO, however, even if done by ourselves - maybe much of hit-and-trial as well as free tips / tricks available, DOES show results. Here also, the results do take time to show up, however. The benefit is - its your own efforts and its without real dollar cost!

I believe SEO is a much better way to achieve page ranking at a lower cost. The key part of the question is "lower cost" and SEO can be done by you. If you don't feel you have the expertise to do it, study up a little, it isn't that hard. Use business sites like this one and others where your articles and ads are automatically SEO optimized. But don't pay someone to do SEO for you. There are so many SEO scams out there that it usually isn't worth it. You end up getting on the front page of Google but with a search term that is hardly ever used and usually only in one very specific geographic location. There are legitimate SEO experts and people who truly will help you to do it the right way, but expect to pay a premium for those services, their expertise is not cheap.

I would have to say SEO..Have you heard of organic SEO? It’s getting found on the search engines without paying the search engines for the placement, and keep getting found for a long, long time. Some of the benefits include: People click more on organically optimized websites, The search results are long-lasting, Organic SEO builds greater trust and It’s quite cheaper compared to paid listings.
