it is not a question of how much is enough. Quantity is irrelevant, what is relevant is quality. 1 pr4 back link is worth far more than a couple of hundred pr 0 back links. Back links are important

Without backlinks, regardless of content, design, or product a website will never be found unless that link is specifically requested. Compare, the importance of backlinks to a website as fingers are to a hand. Without fingers, the hand is still there but how well can it function? There is software available to assist you in the procedure of obtaining backlinks. Do not use software, programs or servicers that offer fast linking. 10 new links per week or maximum of 80 per month (which is really pushing it) are acceptable to Google. This is the Search Engine (72%) you are mostly wooing. Do a Search for "Directories". Look for "Submit URL" or such like and then complete the listing. Do not accept backlinks for porno, gambling or dodgy websites as the SE will discredit you. Even being on a shared server with these types of domains may affect your Page Rank. Linking is very serious so please read up on SEO as the outlines can be totally extensive. Hope this helps.

I have an SEO company I deal with. I'm told thousands are good but never stop building backlinks. The logic is even if you achieve #1 ranking with Google you'll only hold it for so long before your closest competitor builds more links, and surpasses you. You should always continue building links!

@disberg - you do not have to have backlinks in order to be found by the SE's I had one site hit 4thposition page one in 5hours flat from being published and that was with NO back links

When it comes to marketing in any form, the key is consistency. No matter how well someone has done in the past the question is often asked, "What have you done for me lately?" In my career I have learned that when you find something that works, stopping it is not the best way to stay on top. This is the same thing with SEO and backlinks. They have been proven. After you achieve a manner of success with them, keep doing what made you successful. You still need to continue to test other aspects.
