Because it sounds good. The money is not 'in the list'. That is a constantly repeated sound bite that means squat. The money is not in the list but in building a pool of qualified interested prospects. The money is in that pool of prospects which you build yourself not in a group of random names (Which is what most people want to call a list) that have zero interest in what you offer. Stop worrying about the 'list' and worry about promoting yourself and what you can do for others and give people a way to stay in touch with you such as a newsletter subscription etc. If you are doing that then the list will come to you, prequalified with an interest and more apt to buy. Most of the time that phrase is used for no other reason than to convince you to part with money or contacts for their benefit.
