Depends on many factors, for us we use Ad words, PPC campaigns with a budget set for each day and month. We review our rankings on Google pretty much daily, reviews and improving key phrases as well as added or deleting key words that are not performing. We try to keep our site as fresh and updated as possible it is a full time job, but the results are definitely good. You do not have to start with a big budget for each day. You need to fully understand what your target market as well as what your competition is doing in order for you to get the quality hits to your site. The problem with many traffic generating programs, people only have 10 or so seconds to look at your splash page or site. Most are just interested in getting the max number of sites or clicks so they can get there site rotated for free. I feel the hits from here all doing one thing, another click on your counter of your site.....
