When you like an article, you click on the "top it" link. It's kind of like the "like" at FaceBook. You can comment, but if you're not inspired, the "top" will do. What will happen is that the people in your network will see in the Network Feed that you liked the article, some will come and take a look, which could bring other tops. The more tops an article gets, the more people want to read it, cause it cause it caught the interest of many members. One more thing : the articles that get the most tops appear in the APSense daily email newsletter, which gives it even more visibility, so the author gets recognition. Suggestion : if you really like an article, you can top, tweet, and share on FaceBook, and say in a comment you did all that
