All of the answers provided have merit. There is another issue to consider and that is what it is you are trying to do. If you do the social networks just to be social then by all means go nuts.
If on the other hand you are using social networks for business purposes, such as to develop a "downline", a group of followers for an opportunity or to develop ties to nurture a business relationship with, you should develop a plan and work it like a business plan.
For example, on a piece of paper, lol as if people still use that, in a word document develop a generic profile of yourself. Write everything you can about yourself.
Then after you have dome that, take excerpts and create a generic business profile. Finally, create a generic social type profile.
Now when you join a social network you have a ready made profile you can upload instantly. If you have one main website try to include it in all your profiles so you develop backlinks.
After you have done this set up a blog. If you do not have a website you can get a free blog from either blogger.com or wordpress.com In your blog use one of your ready made profiles.
Now whenever you get the inkling you can visit one or more of your social networks, read some post and interact.
Use the little tools made available like the one right here above labeled bookmark. The beauty of these "apps" is that you can write an article, comments, or post a blog on one place and using that it will post it to all the social networks you belong to.
So you see, it depends on your purposes.
I hope this helped you, rethinking this has sure helped me. Now excuse me while I use the little app to spread this throughout my "network".
